Looking After Yourself Abroad
Avoid drinking tap water, ice in drinks and don't use tap water when cleaning your teeth. Only drink bottled water and make sure that the bottle is sealed.
Avoid uncooked food and uncooked shellfish and salads.
Do not buy food from the street, try and keep to the hotel and reputable restaurants when eating.
Even though it is very hot, and you may be tempted to have ice cream from the street, only buy ice cream from hotels and reputable shops.
Don't forget to cover up with insect repellent.
Swimming in fresh water can be dangerous on certain islands due to a parasitic infection called Schistosomiasis. It can be found in parts of the following islands: Antigua, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia.
Vaccinations for tetanus and Hepatitis A are generally recommended for travel in the tropics, but consult your doctor for advice on all inoculations.
Avoid handling animals on your trip. You may see monkeys or local domestic animals such as dogs and cats during your trip, but resist the urge to play with them as their bites may carry serious diseases.
