What is a Trousseau
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, trousseau means "the clothes collected by a bride for her marriage".
It shows the brides independence and that her parents have given her away with pride.
Traditionally the trousseau was incorporated into the dowry. Parents would provide the bride with items for herself as well as household goods and even cash.
Today the dowry is become illegal in most parts of the world and in-laws do not expect it. Brides do still take personal items that they will need for the early part of their married life.
A trousseau is a collection of traditional outfits such as saris, lenghas and shalwar kameez, jewellery, shoes, handbags, eveningwear, daywear, casualwear lingerie, cosmetics and toiletries. There are also some traditional items put in to the suitcase.
