Things To Consider
Size
Consider the number of people you are inviting. Most hotels have halls with false partitions so the size of the hall can be adjusted accordingly. The right size venue is very important, you do not want your reception to squashed or to look too spread out.
Budget
How much do you have to spend on a venue. This is important, some locations will be out of the question with a low budget. Look around and compare what you are getting for the different prices.
Recommendations
Family or friends may be able to recommend nice venues from weddings or functions they may attended at the place. Look in bridal magazines and the yellow pages for ideas.
Try and get a venue near the ceremony, if you can.
Does the venue have restrictions on alcohol, time, dancing and music. Residential area venues may want you to turn the music down early.
It is important that you pay a few visits to the venue before you go for it, check out the decor, ambience, parking, is there enough capacity for the number of guests.
Think about layout is the venue going to be big enough for how you want the layout of the wedding to be.
Do not just make a telephone booking and expect the venue to be secure. Alway send a written confirmation or send a fax confirming the booking, with date and time you would require the venue to be available from and till what time in the evening.
Make sure you get a letter back from the venue coordinator confirming your booking with the right details.
Find out the name of the person you are talking to and always get another managers name, if you book six months in advance the person you are dealing with may leave.
Find out who is going to be in charge on the day.
Deposits will usually not be paid back if you need to cancel or change dates, unless under serious circumstance.
Make a provisional booking, most places will hold the venue for you between 7 and 14 days. Some will hold until they get someone else inquiring on the same day, they will then get in contact with you to tell you to make up your mind and send in your deposit confirming the booking.
Always cancel all provisional bookings once you have made a decision and don't take the whole 6 months to decide.
Where abouts are you going to hold the wedding.
Seating Style, if you are having a sit down can the venue hold the number of people for a sit down.
Do you want a hotel or a hall.
Are there an hidden costs, clearing up, valet servicing, parking.
Is the parking facility what you require.
